There will be cash and product prizes on all levels from kids to the sugar art enthusiast to the master level so anyone is welcome to join in the fun!

Cake Art Contest

For our very first Sugarprism Sugar Art Expo our cake theme is Plunderous Pirates And Sinister Sirens. We all know how fun a plunderous Pirate can be but what is a “Siren” you ask? A siren is where mermaids originated from but they were not the classical sweet and caring kind. Not at all.. Pirate tales of the sirens at sea were of a far different kind. They were known to lure in pirates and their ships with their beauty and mesmerizing song then bring the unsuspecting pirates to their demise. There are so many ways to create fun, colorful and exciting designs on a cake with our show theme. You can go classic Pirate style which is always a hit, but don’t be afraid to think outside the classical ship! Think giant ships and battle ships or even treasure loaded sunken ships in the sea and sinister sirens, think creatures of dark crashing waters… think ruffled cuffs, pirate hats and leather attire or beautiful long haired sinister maidens of the sea. We are looking for the feel of our Plunderous Pirates And Sinister Siren theme but we encourage our contestants to bring their own unique ideas and style! The most important part of these contests? HAVE FUN!!!

This contest includes three levels as follows : Master level contest battling it out for one overall cash/gift grand prize. Professional Level ~ (Gold) 1st place/cash and gift prize, 2nd (Silver)/gift award. 3rd place (bronze). Contestants who have won first place in any past sugar art competition are prohibited from entering any other level competition. All other competitors may choose their level of entry, however our staff has the right to move you to another entry level if we feel your cake entry is better fit on another level to keep it fair for all entires.

ALL cakes must be set on covered professional appearing cake boards. You may set cakes on a cake drum up to 3 inches high ,however do not bring cakes in on cake stands as we are trying to avoid anything tipping over accidentally and ruining another contestants show piece. ALL Cakes MUST be at least 50% REAL CAKE , the rest may be made of non edible material i.e. styrofoam dummies, internal structure, etc. Any caustic, flammable, sharp, or other dangerous materials are strictly prohibited from being used on your showpiece. All entrants will provide a list of materials used to create your showpiece. All entrance must submit at least 3 “in progress” photos which will allow the judges to visualize the internal structure of your cake. Sugarprism employees and staff i.e. judges reserve the right to cut into your cake if we feel any of these guidelines have been violated. Use your wild imaginations and think outside the box to create these contest pieces , however all cake entries should follow the theme of the show, plunderous Pirates & Sinister Sirens. Any cake displaying or portraying anything our judges feel is of offensive character or nature will be disqualified and removed. There is no height limit on any cake entry as long the cake is sturdy and will not risk tipping over and damaging another contestants cake. Cake must remain within the confines of the cake board, meaning any structure that extends away from your cake must not reach outside the cake board for the exception of small pieces within reason. In order to reserve a good distance between our entries we are setting parameters on the size of cake boards use for displays. Kids category are allowed to use up to a 12″ cake board and no smaller than a 6″ board. Novice, professional and master category may use up to a 16 inch cake board and no smaller than a 6″ cake board to display their entries. The cake should “fit” the cake board properly meaning of your cake is 6 inches around, a 14 inch cake board is not a proper professional fit. Cakes will be judged by professional and skilled judges. Cakes will be judged on a 25 point system, plus popular vote by token consideration, meaning you can be given up to 25 points by the judges, Each of the 5 categories will be given a number of points then all areas will be added up to determine the contestants overall score.

Points will be scored in the following areas: Difficulty Of Technique (1 to 5 points) : Judges will determine the difficulty of techniques contestants used to create your showpiece. Collaboration Of Techniques (1 to 5 points) : Show the judges how many different techniques you used on your cake. We like to see many different techniques used, however more doesn’t always mean better! Use Of Color (1 to 5 points) : Judges will determine if the color coordination of your cake is aesthetically appealing. Overall Appearance (1 to 5 points) : Judges will consider the overall appearance of your cake in its entirety i.e. cleanliness, design, structure and overall appeal. Theme (1 to 5 points) : Judges will look at the theme of your cake and determine of it represents our Sugar Art Show Theme, Plunderous Pirates & Sinister Sirens.
